Formed in Boston in 1986, the Pixies pioneered a sound built on abrupt shifts between quiet verses and loud, distorted choruses, heard on albums such as Surfer Rosa (1988) and Doolittle (1989), that shaped much of the alternative rock that followed. Kurt Cobain said that Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was his attempt to write a Pixies-style song, and bands including Radiohead and Weezer have also cited the group as an influence. After splitting in the early 1990s, the band reunited in 2004 and, following Kim Deal's departure in 2013, continued with bassist Paz Lenchantin, releasing Indie Cindy in 2014, their first full-length album in more than two decades.
