Steve Vai began his career transcribing music for Frank Zappa before joining Zappa's band as a guitarist, then gained wider recognition with Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth's solo band and Whitesnake, and on screen in the 1986 film Crossroads. His 1990 solo album Passion and Warfare helped bring instrumental rock guitar to a mainstream audience, and he later toured with Joe Satriani in the G3 guitar showcase. Through his long collaboration with Ibanez, including the JEM signature model and the Universe seven-string guitar, Vai also influenced guitar design and helped popularize the seven-string instrument in rock and metal.
