Formed in Seattle in 1984, Soundgarden was among the earliest bands of the city's grunge scene and the first of them to sign with a major label, joining A&M Records in 1989 after early releases on Sub Pop. Their 1994 album Superunknown debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced the singles "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman," both of which won Grammy Awards in 1995. Blending heavy, Black Sabbath-influenced riffs with unusual tunings and Chris Cornell's wide vocal range, the band helped bring alternative rock into the mainstream during the 1990s.
