This is the original hand-drawn concept art for the Small Faces’ 1978 album "78 In The Shade," created by artist Larry Franklin. He designed the final cover released by Atlantic Records. The artwork, intended as part of the cover before being replaced by a band photograph, features watercolors and likely airbrush techniques over pencil art. It measures approximately 17 x 23 inches and comes from Ian McLagan's personal collection. Despite age discoloration and folds, it remains a vital archival piece.
Additional Information: "78 In The Shade" was the final studio album by the Small Faces, following their 1975 reunion. Released on Atlantic Records in 1978, the album marked a return to recording after a period of hiatus. It featured musicians Steve Marriott, Rod Stewart, and Ian McLagan, embodying the band's classic rock sound.
Provenance/Authenticity: This lot comes directly from the private collection of Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Ian McLagan, legendary founder and keyboard player of iconic rock band The Small Faces / Faces. McLagan who also toured with The Rolling Stones, The New Barbarians and Bob Dylan, and recorded with dozens of artists. It will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by Lee McLagan, on behalf of the Ian McLagan estate.
Condition: The artwork is in very good condition with significant age discoloration. The substrate has been folded twice at the top. The piece showcases a fitting state for such a rare production artifact, maintaining the integrity and details of the original art.
