Sammy Hagar first gained attention as the lead singer of Montrose, whose 1973 debut album became a cornerstone of American hard rock, before building a successful solo career that produced the 1984 hit "I Can't Drive 55" from the album VOA. In 1985 he replaced David Lee Roth as Van Halen's lead vocalist, and the band's first album with him, 5150, became Van Halen's first record to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200, followed by the chart-topping OU812 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Hagar was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen in 2007, and his era with the group remains one of the most commercially successful chapters in American hard rock.
