Formed in Bakersfield, California, in 1993, Korn is widely credited with pioneering nu metal, combining down-tuned seven-string guitars, hip-hop-influenced grooves and Jonathan Davis's raw, confessional vocals on their 1994 self-titled debut. Their 1998 album Follow the Leader debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and the band went on to win Grammy Awards for the "Freak on a Leash" video and for the song "Here to Stay," helping bring heavy music into the late-1990s and early-2000s mainstream. See You on the Other Side, released in late 2005, was the band's first album after guitarist Brian "Head" Welch's departure and marked a shift toward a more industrial, production-driven sound.
