Derek Riggs created Eddie, the undead figure who first appeared on the cover of Iron Maiden's 1980 self-titled debut and went on to front nearly every album, single sleeve and stage production in the band's career. Riggs painted the covers for Iron Maiden's major 1980s releases, including Killers, The Number of the Beast, Powerslave and Somewhere in Time, and his detailed, macabre style helped establish the visual language of the new wave of British heavy metal. Eddie became one of the most recognizable mascots in popular music, giving Iron Maiden a consistent visual identity that has spanned decades and inspired countless other heavy metal artists to develop their own visual identities.
Condition: The artwork is preserved in extremely good condition, showing little to no indication of wear, aging, or storage. The original ballpoint ink remains deeply saturated and exceptionally crisp against the clean surface of the watercolor board, which has been kept completely flat and protected from light.
