Audioslave formed in 2001 when Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell joined guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk of Rage Against the Machine, uniting two of the most influential acts of the 1990s alternative and hard rock era. Their second album, Out of Exile, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in 2005, and that same year the band played a free open-air concert in Havana, widely reported as the first by an American rock band in Cuba. Over three studio albums before disbanding in 2007, the group blended Cornell's wide-ranging vocals with Morello's unconventional guitar techniques.
