Iron Maiden was the brainchild of bassist Steve Harris, who started the band in 1975 in the Leyton area of east London. One of the leading lights of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Maiden – with its gruesome mascot Eddie gracing almost every record cover and making dramatic appearances at concerts – underwent a series of early lineup changes, recording the albums Iron Maiden in 1980 and Killers in 1981 with singer Paul Di’Anno. Bruce Dickinson became lead vocalist in 1981 and first appeared on Maiden’s Number of the Beast record, generally regarded as one of the finest heavy-metal albums in history. Without the benefit of radio airplay, Maiden released a slew of U.K. and U.S. gold and platinum LPs in the ‘80s, including 1983’s Piece of Mind, 1984’s Powerslave, the concert album Live after Death, 1986’s Somewhere in Time and 1988’s Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. In 1993, Dickinson departed, and Blaze Bayley took his place. Six years later, both he and guitarist Adrian Smith returned to Iron Maiden, leading to a Maiden revival worldwide. Overall, their discography includes 37 albums, including 15 studio efforts. Dickinson also doubles as a professional pilot and has flown the Maiden airliner, Ed Force One, on Maiden world tours. With heavy metal memorabilia gaining in popularity, Maiden material is certainly enticing to collectors, with vintage concert posters being a particularly strong area. Tickets for shows from the band’s heyday are also an attractive, and inexpensive, option, as are old pins and patches. Maiden merchandise is also an area for collectors, as lunch boxes, skateboards and toy cars are out there, as well. Tour clothing from the ‘80s can also be nice options for those interested in Maiden memorabilia. Authenticated autographs can increase the value of Maiden pieces, and instruments played by Maiden band numbers are often big-ticket items.
