Offered Here: The Rolling Stones 1963 Eel Pie Island barney Bubbles Designed Handbill. This original letterpress handbill is from The Rolling Stones' performance at Eel Pie Island on July 12, 1963. The event was organized by Ian McLagan as a school function, featuring his band, The Muleskinners, as the opener. The handbill was designed by McLagan’s fellow student Colin Fulcher, later known as the renowned graphic designer Barney Bubbles. It measures 3 x 7 inches and is printed on heavy cardstock, capturing a pivotal moment in the early British rock scene during The Stones' formative period.
Additional Information: The Rolling Stones' residency at Eel Pie Island in the early 1960s was pivotal in their development as a band. The venue, situated on the Thames, was a key site in the London music scene, where many bands honed their craft. Barney Bubbles, originally Colin Fulcher, was a student at the time, later gaining fame for his album cover designs and contributions to visual culture in rock music.
Provenance/Authenticity: This lot comes directly from the private collection of Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Ian McLagan, legendary founder and keyboard player of iconic rock band The Small Faces / Faces. McLagan who also toured with The Rolling Stones, The New Barbarians and Bob Dylan, and recorded with dozens of artists. It will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by Lee McLagan, on behalf of the Ian McLagan estate.
Condition: The handbill is in good condition, with noticeable wear and signs of age as expected from a circulated document of its time. It has heavy edge wear at the top corners, is missing both bottom corners, and exhibits heavy edge wear along the bottom edge. The handbill was previously folded in half and has a vintage phone number written in pen on the reverse, reflecting its history as part of the early 1960s London club circuit.
