Offered Here: Small Faces 1978 78 in the Shade Rejected Test Pressing with Unreleased Track & Album Cover Mock Up. This lot consists of a pair of extremely rare items related to the 1978 album entitled '78 in the Shade' by the Small Faces. Included is a rejected test pressing of the LP featuring an alternate song on side B track 3 entitled 'Yankee Dime', a recording that has never been released in any other format. This track was ultimately replaced by 'Soldier' ("Soldier Boy' on the US pressings) on the final commercial production. Accompanying the vinyl is a unique mock up of the album cover for '78 in the Shade' created before label credits were added. This prototype sleeve specifically lists the 'Yankee Dime' track but features a hand drawn line through the title with the notation of 'Soldier' written next to it, along with an additional name added to the thanks list. This era of the band featured Ian McLagan on keyboards, providing the melodic foundation for these final studio sessions.

Additional Information: '78 in the Shade' marked the Small Faces' return to the music scene in 1978, post their initial disbandment in 1969. Though not as commercially successful as their earlier releases, the album hailed the return of key band members Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane, driving the Small Faces back into the rock landscape. Tracks like “Soldier Boy” reflect the band's effort to combine their classic sound with influences from mid-1970s rock trends. The album's production history and the involvement of notable figures of the era add to its cultural significance.

Provenance/Authenticity: This lot comes directly from the private collection of Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Ian McLagan, legendary founder and keyboard player of iconic rock band The Small Faces / Faces. McLagan who also toured with The Rolling Stones, The New Barbarians and Bob Dylan, and recorded with dozens of artists. It will be accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by Lee McLagan, on behalf of the Ian McLagan estate.

Condition: The test pressing is in a state consistent with items of this vintage. The vinyl shows signs of age with typical surface wear. The album cover mock up, rendered on thin cardboard, exhibits some wear on the corners and edges, but the hand-drawn elements remain distinct and legible. The dimensions of the mock up sleeve adhere to standard LP cover sizing.
