Freddie Mercury fronted Queen from the band's formation in London in 1970 until his death in 1991, and his operatic vocal range, flamboyant stagecraft and use of a sawn-off microphone stand made him one of the most influential frontmen in rock. By 1977 Queen had followed the international success of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by becoming a major arena act in Britain and North America, and that year's News of the World album introduced "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions," two songs that became fixtures of stadiums and sporting events worldwide. Mercury's ability to command large audiences, later shown in Queen's widely praised 1985 Live Aid set at Wembley Stadium, remains a reference point for live rock performance.
