KISS, formed in New York City in 1973 by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, built one of rock's most recognizable identities through painted-face personas, elaborate stage costumes, pyrotechnics and stage effects that made the concert itself the centerpiece of the band's appeal. The Hottest Show on Earth tour supported Sonic Boom, released in 2009 as the band's first studio album in more than a decade, and featured the lineup of Simmons and Stanley alongside Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, who carried on the Catman and Spaceman characters originated by Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. The band's influence on arena rock staging and its devoted fan following, known as the KISS Army, were recognized with its induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
