John Fogerty was the lead singer, guitarist and principal songwriter of Creedence Clearwater Revival, the El Cerrito, California band whose roots-based "swamp rock" produced enduring songs such as "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Green River," "Born on the Bayou" and "Fortunate Son." Drawing on rockabilly, rhythm and blues and Southern imagery, Fogerty wrote concise, guitar-driven songs that stood apart from the extended psychedelic jams common in late-1960s rock, and "Fortunate Son" became one of the era's best-known protest songs. After Creedence disbanded, he built a solo career that included the 1985 chart-topping album Centerfield, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1993.
