Ronnie James Dio, who sang with Rainbow and Black Sabbath before forming Dio in 1982, helped define the operatic, fantasy-themed vocal style of heavy metal, and his band's lineups included bassist Jimmy Bain, guitarist Craig Goldy, drummer Simon Wright and keyboardist Scott Warren. Motörhead, founded by bassist and vocalist Lemmy Kilmister in 1975 after his departure from Hawkwind, fused the speed and aggression of punk with heavy metal and influenced the development of thrash and speed metal, with guitarist Phil Campbell serving in the band for more than three decades. Iron Maiden emerged as a leading force of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, and drummer Nicko McBrain, who joined in 1982, became a long-standing part of the group as it built one of the largest international followings in the genre.
