September 1969. The Rolling Stones gather in the Los Angeles hills to prepare for their American tour. The sixteen people, including the Stones, are an eclectic group from Sweden, England, Scotland, and all corners of America. They share meals, rehearse, play with their children. Despite the intimate beginnings, it will be the largest tour of the time;
the latest wave of the rock & roll explosion.
Ethan A. Russell photographs every facet of the Rolling Stones on the road. The quiet moments back stage, tuning, resting, preparing. Greeting other legends: Chuck Berry, B.B. King. The long waits in airports, hotels, laughing around a Vegas poker table. The intimacy carries into the shows. Night after night, the Rolling Stones propel ecstatic crowds, arms outstretched, to the lip of the stage, only four feet high. The tour comes to an end, a huge success, with only the added free concert waiting on December 6th.
In 2007, Rhino Publications released this spectacular 400+ page monstrosity in a print run of 2600 in two formats. Numbers 1-750 comprise the "Deluxe Edition", complete with a handmade Ethan Russell print ($950.00 store price). Numbers 751-2600 comprise the standard version. Each book is signed and numbered by the author.
Featured here is a "Deluxe Edition" (#564/ 2,600), boxed in an impressive 16 3/4 x 19 x 5 inch clamshell case and contains a signed, limited hand-made gelatin silver print.
Clamshell and portfolio are hand-made and edges are wrapped in beautiful red T-Saifu fabric imported from Japan. The cover of the clamshell and book cover are printed in 4-color process. The title on the spine of the clamshell and cover of the portfolio have a deep blind deboss. The interior of the portfolio has a die cut insert to hold and protect the photograph.
The photo - of Mike and Keith - has been professionally framed and matted and is part of this lot. The frame dimensions are 18 x 22 inches. Both items (the book and frame) are in pristine condition. |
