As road- and band manager for the Grateful Dead and personal manager of Jerry Garcia, Steve Parish received and collected many interesting mementos over the years. Specifics of this item, which comes directly from his personal collection, are;
Herb Green and the Grateful Dead almost go hand-in-hand. As one of the bands' earliest, trusted and best friend, Herb was able to capture the band in a way they really liked and preferred. Herb also had to advantage of living next door to the Dead's recording studio, making them even more accessible to him than any other photographer at the time. Many of Herb's photos have received global recognition for more than the high quality of his work. He lamented the faces of the Dead pretty much from its conception and his images simply tend to "speak" to you.
The photo in this lot is a rare shot of Pigpen and is mounted on a heavy, pressed black board. The photo, which was originally taken in Pigpen's house, was given to the band by Herb after Pigpen passed away. Because the photo meant so much to the band and its organization, it hung in the Grateful Dead's office for many years. The photo shows some stains and minor surface wear. The overall condition is VG. The dimensions of the photo are 13 1/4 x 20 3/4 inches, as where the board measures 17 x 24 1/2 inches. |
